2019 LBG Bill Neill Lanarkshire Open
Saturday 5th October
&
Sunday 6th October 2019
The 2nd event for LBG, the 2019 Bill Neill Lanarkshire Open took place on 5th & 6th October 2019. The Grade A tournament was named as a tribute to Lanarkshire Badminton legend Bill Neill who sadly passed away last year at 78 years old. A total of 69 players entered which made for a high standard of badminton being played across the weekend. This included a 52 minute long battle during Group D Mixed Doubles match between Callum McMillan & Erin Waddell versus Alan McMillan & Aileen Travers. Despite the scores being very close throughout the 3 sets C. McMillan & E. Waddell managed to edge passed their opponents winning 21-19, 23-25 & 23-21. The competition also proved to be a successful one for Holly Newall who won Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles (w/Lauren Middleton) & Mixed Doubles (w/Jack MacGregor). MacGregor managed to take 2 titles and was runner-up in the Men’s Singles to local Lanarkshire player Danny Robson.

The matches were all very competitive and the pupils played some very good badminton in both the junior and senior events. Starting around 9.30 in the morning we played right through to 2.30 in the afternoon so we could get the matches completed. The winners and runners-up were:

Runners-up: Chryston
Senior Quaich (S4-S6):

Congratulations to Holy Cross winning both titles and to all the teams for entering the tournament and playing in a very sporting manner. Holy Cross’s two teams will now represent Lanarkshire in the SSBU National Junior and Senior Secondary Quaich Events next year.
Good luck to them – we will be reporting on their progress on the Lanarkshire Badminton Website!
Thanks also goes to Hugh Ainsley for organising and running the event and to the teachers and helpers from each school that entered the teams and managed the matches on the day in addition the Active Schools teams across Lanarkshire for support.
